OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECY
GENRE OVERVIEW
The books of Old Testament prophecy capture the messages of the prophets—God’s messengers sent to deliver both warnings and hope to specific groups of people. These prophets are given a difficult task, to share God’s truth with those who have ignored or rebelled against God.
The majority of the prophets speak to the Northern and Southern kingdoms of Israel, God's chosen people, living as a divided nation. Other messages are directed toward foreign nations, even Israel’s enemies, urging them to repent and turn to God.
The prophets are divided into two categories, major and minor, the main difference being the length and breadth of their message. Many of the prophets, both major and minor, offer prophecies or foreshadowing of Jesus, the promised Savior. Their prophecies provide insight into His birth, His purpose, His teachings, and even His death on the cross.
The books of prophecy can be challenging to read because of their intense and often graphic language. Although they reveal God’s hatred towards sin and His desire for justice, they also reveal God’s protection and redemption of the faithful.
