OLD TESTAMENT LAW

GENRE OVERVIEW

The first five books of the Bible, known as the books of the Law or the Pentateuch, tell of the creation of Earth, the fall of man, and God’s pursuit to restore our relationship with Him. Throughout this section of scripture, there are epic stories that reveal God’s faithfulness and expose the sinfulness of humanity. God establishes His chosen people and leads them on a treacherous journey out of oppression and into his provision.

Throughout scripture, God uses unlikely people to fulfill his purposes, including Abraham, Noah, and Moses. God makes covenants with his people, wanting them to follow God alone and live in righteousness. Although humanity consistently fails to be faithful, God remains steadfast in His love and mercy.

Many of the laws in this section may seem outdated or irrelevant, but they hold cultural and spiritual significance. These laws are referenced throughout Scripture, reinforcing the role they played in God’s overall narrative. Because God is holy, He requires perfection and justice. The law, and humanity's inability to follow God’s commands, show both God’s perfection and the flaws of mankind. Luckily, God’s endless pursuit does not end there. Instead, God sends a spotless sacrificial lamb, Jesus, to fulfill the law and atone for the sins of the world.
