HOSEA + GOMER: AN IMAGE OF ISRAEL’S REBELLION

How does God compare idolatry to adultery? What does this comparison reveal about God’s feelings towards Israel?

Hosea 2:7 says, “I will go and return to my first husband, for it was better for me then than now.” How does this verse apply to both Gomer and the nation of Israel? Why is it often easy to forget God’s goodness and past provision?

How is Hosea’s purchase of Gomer an image of God’s pursuit of humanity? How does this image land with you personally?

According to Hosea 4:1-2, how is faithfulness related to knowledge of God? To what does a lack of knowledge lead?

Read Hosea 5:6. Do you believe that God withdrew from the Israelites or that the Israelites felt withdrawn from because of their sin?

In Hosea 5:11, the word for “filth” also means “human precepts.” How can our own desires lead us to waste our time and resources?

Does any of the language in Hosea 6:1-2 remind you of the crucifixion and resurrection? If so, how?

According to Hosea 6:6, what does God desire most? How can we take steps towards loving and knowing Him more deeply?

GOD’S MERCY + COMPASSION TOWARD ISRAEL

Read Hosea 8:4. What does this verse reveal about God’s involvement in Israel’s decision making?

Read 1 Samuel 8:7 and Hosea 10:3-4. How has the rejection of God’s leadership continued throughout history?

Read Hosea 10:13. How did Israel’s reliance on foreign nations reflect their lack of trust in God?

How did God protect the Israelites in Egypt? How did God later protect Jesus in Egypt (see Hosea 11:1 and Matthew 2:13-15)?

In Hosea 12:2-3, why do you think Hosea used Jacob as an example of deceitfulness?

What was God’s repeated message to Israel through the prophets, and how did they respond to those warnings?

In Hosea 13:4, God claimed that there is no savior besides Him. How could that statement influence your view of other religious beliefs?

Hosea 14:9 highlights the importance of walking in God’s guidance. What is a practical step you can take to live out God’s wisdom?
