ZEPHANIAH 3

GOD’S PLAN FOR RESTORATION AND REDEMPTION

After expressing God’s judgment upon the other nations, Zephaniah returns the focus to Judah’s capital city, Jerusalem. God warns the people of Judah, rebuking them for not listening to Him or accepting His correction. Even Judah’s priests and prophets have abandoned God, making the nation indistinguishable from their unfaithful enemies.

God describes how He will pour out His indignation in the form of burning anger that will consume the Earth. God’s fire will first destroy, in preparation to refresh, refine, and purify the nation. God promises to restore Judah, creating a new, beautiful city that honors Him.

Once God has redeemed Jerusalem, He will dwell among them and rejoice in their midst. God will sing with them, exalting them with love and gladness! Zephaniah’s message does not end with destruction, but instead points to God’s steadfast love for His people and His desire to dwell amongst them. Zephaniah's message ultimately points to the hope of God's eternal kingdom and the ultimate redemption brought through Jesus.

Zephaniah 3:17 - The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.
