THE GERSHONITES, KOHATHITES, + THE MERARITES

The Levites are divided into three groups, named after Levi’s three sons: the Gershonites, Kohathites, and Merarites. Everyone in these three groups has a specific role related to how they are to serve the tabernacle. 

The Gershonites handle the cloth elements of the tabernacle, the Kohathites handle the holy elements, and the Merarites handle the structural elements.
